School’s Back in Session – Don’t Forget the Importance of Oral Health
It is hot here in Atlanta, and even though summer still has weeks to go, school is back in session. With the excitement of back to school, getting new clothes and school supplies, meeting new teachers, and catching up with friends – it is important that your child’s oral health does not fall off the grid. With just a few reminders, you can help your child maintain optimal oral health throughout the school year.
- Remind your child to brush his/her teeth every morning. While this may sound silly, we know how hurried school mornings can be. With the stress of eating breakfast, finishing any last-minute homework, and catching the bus on time – teeth brushing is often forgotten. Brushing teeth in the morning is extremely important because it helps to remove plaque buildup that has occurred during the night. Be sure to build in enough time in your morning routine so that your kiddo has adequate time to brush before heading out the door.
- Pack a toothbrush. While there is not a lot of extra time built into the school day, encouraging your child to brush after lunch can go a long way in helping to protect his/her smile. Even a quick 30-second brush can be beneficial!
- Keep flossers on hand. If your child is undergoing orthodontic treatment, it is incredibly important that s/he takes an extra measure to protect the teeth. Braces are notorious for trapping food particles. In order to avoid decay (and any embarrassing moments), using individual flosser right after lunch will help to remove food that is stuck in the teeth. If your child has Invisalign Teen®, it is essential that s/he remembers to put the aligners back in after eating and brushing.
- Don’t forget the mouthguard. Contact sports are fun to play, but they can wreak havoc on your child’s smile. If your child is involved in any type of action sport, it is important to remember that a custom mouthguard goes a long way in protecting the teeth.
