Your Holiday Smile

Smiling Patient

This year, families throughout the country will gather together and celebrate the holidays with abandon. After the seclusion of last year, 2021 holidays are sure to be more festive than ever, and probably more hectic as well. With annual treats laid out and busy nights and days ahead, it may be easy for you to neglect your usual oral care. No doubt there will be days that will end with exhaustion; brushing and flossing may be put to the side until morning when the stores of energy are replenished.

Maintaining Oral Health During the Rush

Even though your days may be hectic, it is still important for you to take care of your teeth and gums. Neglecting to do so will give harmful bacteria in your mouth an opportunity to develop acids and toxins that eat away at tooth enamel and build up plaque that can cause gingivitis. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to help keep your mouth healthy even when the days get out of control.

  • Keep your mouth and body hydrated – Saliva production is essential in keeping your mouth bathed in moisture that constantly cleans out harmful bacteria. Medicines, health conditions and wearing a mask for hours at a time can create dry mouth, which allows the harmful bacteria to grow and cause problems. Sipping on water throughout the day, chewing sugarless gum or sucking on sugarless hard candy are ways you can keep moisture flowing.
  • Rinse your mouth out – If you are not able to brush your teeth after meals, at least give your mouth a good rinse. This will help eliminate food particles that provide breeding grounds on which the harmful bacteria can feed.
  • Use disposable toothbrushes and flossing devices – The market has small disposable toothbrushes and flossing devices that come in handy when the days get hectic and you may not be able to follow your regular routine. Make use of these devices to keep your teeth and gums in good shape.

Taking a few minutes every day to attend to your oral health will make a big difference in the long run. The coming days will be full of activities, visits and plenty of sweets so remember to brush and floss to keep your smile healthy and beautiful.

Dr. Neil Shah is my kind of dentist. Not the type to lecture. He’s there to help. Just a cool guy. The front desk staff is top notch, and Jan my hygienist is informative and sweet. I’ll never go to a diff dentist. I’m glad I found this place.

I see doctors Shah and Lee. They are patient, personable, and always mindful about comfort levels. Brittany is my hygenist, she is the best! She is friendly, explains the treatment plan well, and is gentle during cleanings.
